What the hell is this thing on his property that he wanted “blocked out” on the map? Looks like a radar tower...what the hell?

Looks like some sort of doppler radar...though potentially a former one considering how dirty it is.

That’s a Doppler radar.

yea...but why? and why the “block it out” requirement? I feel like that thing would be way more of an eyesore too than a bunch of cars

He is just worried that North Korea thinks his property is some sort of military installation.
Lots of vehicles? Big radar thing?
Nuke it.

WAT?
No idea, but it looks COOL.

Yeah- i pulled it up on goolge maps via one of the links and thought it was a water tower. You have a much better pic

Did you find his address on street maps?
![]() 09/18/2017 at 15:29 |

Just went to one of the ads on craigslist and the cross streets were listed...it was easy Googling from there

Maybe one of us should call him and ask. Just be like “Hey so, I’m not interested in those cars, but is that a freaking Doppler Radar on your property?”

because it is a landmark that can be easily used to home in on his location. if you live in the general area, you could drive down a bunch of the older more desolate roads until you found the radar.....
or if you already know where the radar is, “hey there is a bunch of old cars there too”......

If you have ever seen the movie men in black you would know it’s really an alien spaceship, hence the need to be redacted.

I dunno, but I’m seriously considering calling the guy up and going over there to browse around. Maybe I can help by finding something to take off his hands.

The obvious answer is indeed obvious.

Been driving past it for years, and it’s always been fugly. It was an old Bendix radar installation that supported the SAGE network starting in the late 50s. Basically, watching the border skies. Hard to tell on Google, but the tower is on a small hill. It’s probably the highest point for a decent distance around.
Here’s a thing: http://www.radomes.org/museum/parsehtml.php?html=EmeryMIFUDSfact.html&type=doc_html

When I was a kid, my grandfather told me it was an old Bendix AN/FPS-14. They supported the SAGE computer defense network in the late 50s.

Absolutely (if it happens)! I’m not really in the market for a new project right now, but if something catches my eye and the price is right, I could make room for it.
Tricky thing is, he’s kind of on the other side of Metro Detroit from me, about an hour away. And if I like something that doesn’t run, I’m gonna have to get my hands on a trailer and make sure that my truck’s up to the task. I’ve got the receiver hitch and 7-pin socket, but I never got around to installing a brake controller. Pretty sure I’ve got one in a box somewhere, though...

If you rent a trailer from Uhaul, I’m pretty sure those have surge brakes so you won’t need a controller.

Gotta be ready for when them dang Canadians attack. It at least has a neat history, still ugly though

Oh! Interesting. I’ve spent so much time around RVs that I forgot about old-school surge brakes haha.
But I found it! Tekonsha Sentinel, should still work. I should just go ahead and install it, just so it’s done and I’ll have it anyway.

If you google the name, you should get an EPA document about removing an above ground (I think) Diesel tank. Doesn’t list his address, but gives a road. Thanks the the radar picture above, coupled with google 3D maps, it was pretty easy to find. I like internet sleuthing... I can do it in my undies! lol

If all else fails, I can help you out with my truck and trailer on the weekend. This story makes me mad, so anything I can do to help. I’m in Fenton. If you’re interested, reply back, and I can give you an email.

Hey, that’d be great! I’m gonna see about stopping by there sometime during the week first, just to check things out. I’d hate to lug a trailer there and come back empty-handed.

Any contact info?

I don’t want to post other people’s phone numbers on the internet, but if you visit one of his craigslist ads (two linked in the article are already down, but his ads are easy to find), you can find it there.

That looks like FAR more of a liability, eyesore, danger to local kids being curious and climbing to to drink beers... than any number of cars in the yard.
Whatever side of the argument you may fall on regarding his cars, the presence of this on his property is NOT unrelated to the town’s legal action here, if you ask me.
![]() 09/19/2017 at 10:21 |
|
When I saw that I was kind of wondering why the town was requiring the cars to be removed and not the tower. The tower seems to be much more of an eyesore and the potential to much more dangerous.
![]() 09/19/2017 at 10:24 |

Maybe the cars were an easier legal target, as there’s a statute in place already saying he can’t have all those cars everywhere. I do have to wonder when that statute went into place, as he’s been at it for a lot of years. I do believe better legal help would have put him in a better place.

When I was a teen, the first thing I would have done was bring liquor to the top of that tower in the dead of night. Along with a girl, if possible.

Do it, even if you don’t get anything. It’s like going to a museum.

Well, I went and scoped it out, and look what I found!
It started up, but it will still have to be transported via trailer. Are you still game for this weekend?

Nice!
Sure. I can spare a couple of hours. Let me figure out what time works for me. I’ll give you my email, but in a way that, hopefully, any web crawlers won’t pick up! I use googles email service.
